Induction and Revision of Terminologies

Floriana Esposito, Nicola Fanizzi, Luigi Iannone, Ignazio Palmisano, Giovanni Semeraro

We focus on the problem of the refinement of concept definitions in a terminology expressed in description logics. Generalizing operators proposed in the literature tend to induce overly specific definitions and specializing operators have been poorly investigated. The method presented in this paper, based on multilevel counterfactuals, can be used for inducing new concept descriptions or for refining existing (incorrect) definitions. We formally prove the correctness of the algorithm and discuss its applicability.
