WoMO 2011

Modular Ontologies

Modularity has been and continues to be one of the central research topics in ontology engineering, still catching up with 40 years of related research in software engineering. The workshops on Modular Ontologies (WoMO) bring together researchers from different disciplines who study the problem of modularity in ontologies at a fundamental level, develop design tools for distributed ontology engineering, and apply modularity to different use cases and application scenarios.

The contributions in this volume are of interest to researchers, students and practitioners interested in foundations of ontology engineering, ontology languages and tools, and specifically, to research groups working on ontology modularization and integration problems and developing tool support. They should also be of interest to the broader communities of knowledge representation and reasoning, information integration, description logics and ontology languages, distributed systems, to the Semantic Web community, and to the emerging application domains for ontologies such as life sciences, robotics, e-business, ambient intelligence.

FOMI 2011

Formal Ontologies Meet Industry

Knowledge modeling and the semantic dimension of information plays an increasingly central role in the network economy today. Theoretical research and actual implementations bring up unexpected problems and issues and there is, moreover, an increasing need for solid theoretical foundations for practical applications of ontologies, based on philosophy, linguistics, artificial intelligence and logic.

The fifth International workshop Formal Ontology Meets Industry (FOMI 2011), held in Delft, the Netherlands in July 2011, brings together researchers and practitioners involved in this field, without the restrictions of their usual domains of work: business, medicine, engineering, finance, law, biology, geography, electronics, and many more.

The nine papers presented here are divided into three sections: Philosophical Foundations of FOMI, Methodological Approaches, and finally, Data Integration. Subjects covered in part one include defining the general notion of technical artifacts in formal ontologies and a philosophy inspired schema to describe applied ontologies. Part two includes a paper on the context and methodological approach for the support of ontology-based annotations and meta data management of clinical trial resources, as well as a presentation of two formal approaches to similarity, the geometric model and feature matching model. In part three, there is a proposal to apply ontologies for Linked Open Data to monitor operational behavior, particularly supply chain risk analysis; this section also includes a description of Gellish, a formal ontological language.

Biology, Computation and Linguistics

New Interdisciplinary Paradigms

Over time, the root discipline of philosophy separated into many disciplines and sub-disciplines, each of which has developed its own specific methods. Whilst cross-disciplinary interaction between the three vertices of biology, computing and language processing has often occurred quite naturally in the past, these interactions were mostly two-way, because combining more than two disciplines presents significant challenges. But for some disciplines, reaching out to others is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, and an inverse process of integration is now required. Some disciplines have become unnaturally disconnected from others or from the whole, with the result that a broad view is sometimes lost, and parallels which could be exploited to great advantage cannot even be seen.

This book presents a series of essays on biology, computation and linguistics. It seeks to make their connectedness more apparent so that these single disciplines, which relate naturally, but which have drifted far apart, can fruitfully reconnect from their present degrees of specialization.
Topics covered include: finding isomorphisms between genetic code and verbal language; viewing childhood dialects as modeling computers; the use of a computational formalism - concept formation -for mining both linguistic and biological texts; lower bounds for asymmetrical insertion-deletion languages; a computational model for linguistic complexity; enumerated speculation on possible languages, as well as an exploration of cognitive architectures for multi agent systems from a computational point of view.

The book aims to promote further interconnectedness between the humanistic and the formal sciences, for a less dichotomized, more integrated world.

SCAI 2011

Eleventh Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence

This book contains the proceedings of the 11th Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI), held in Trondheim in May 2011. It presents 17 full papers and an additional six short papers and posters carefully selected from the submissions after thorough peer review. The papers are arranged in four main sections: machine learning, planning, application of AI and robotics and cognition.

Topics covered in the first section include: performance user centered qualities generated by supervised learning algorithms; parallel implementation of the random forests algorithm and a spatial clustering algorithm for management zone delineation. The planning section includes papers on parallel plans; including velocity constraints for trajectory planning on grids; and path consistency to solve the Boolean satisfiability problem. Application of AI addresses subjects such as anomaly detection, as well as accurate motion compensation in minimally invasive treatment. Finally, the robotics and cognition section includes contributions on how relatively simple attractor dynamics can produce complex behavior and a knowledge based system for supporting the reconfiguration of industrial robots.

With its broad range of subjects, this book will be of interest to all those with an interest in, or whose work involves AI.

Neural Nets WIRN10

Proceedings of the 20th Italian Workshop on Neural Nets

This book contains the proceedings of the annual meeting of the Italian Neural Network Society (SIREN), held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy in 2010.

Subjects covered include methodological and implementational topics, which are grouped together into chapters devoted to: models, signal processing and other applications. There are also two chapters which refer to special sessions devoted to current focuses in the field, which this year concern the dynamics of biological networks, and nonlinear systems for multimodal human-machine interaction; the latter representing a special activity of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST).

Providing an insight into the latest news and ideas from a group of international experts, this volume will be of value to all those with an interest in neural networks and related fields.
